Dr Jeannet Kessels and her daughter Joss (almost a veterinarian herself now) established Groodles Australia in 2006 when Jeannet operated her small, but professional veterinary clinic from her home in Camira. Over the years, Groodles Australia has morphed into a wonderfully fun and generous community project, allowing Jeannet and Joss to promote a beautiful breed of companion dog, and facilitate significant donations to charitable causes. Groodles Australia now consists of over twenty incredible community-minded Guardian Families who generously give their time to raise our puppies within their own homes.
It began as a crazy idea to raise funds for the Timor Children’s Foundation which provides scholarships for promising, yet disadvantaged East Timorese students to attend secondary school, learn trades, or go to university. The foundation was started by Dr Jeannet’s father – Arie van Klinken, who spent time in East Timor during and after the Indonesian occupation. He saw education as the best option for rebuilding a traumatised nation.
The program is run (with low administration cost) by the dearly respected Reverend Moises in Dili, and now provides scholarships for approximately 300 students each year. The Greater Springfield Veterinary team aims to send one staff member to East Timor each year to experience the contribution of the successful program. In June 2017, Bec Apps (one of our dedicated Veterinary Nurses) was privileged to visit and assist with a dental health program for schoolchildren.
As the Groodles Australia breeding program began to expand, Dr Jeannet asked her team about any other causes they personally felt important to support. They collaboratively voted for, and have donated $20,000 to Beyond Blue, an Australian non-profit organisation promoting good mental health. The veterinary team have also supported Dr Jeannet’s personal interest, Bob Brown’s Foundation Save the Tarkine Project, which works to protect the magnificent forests of North West Tasmania for future generations to enjoy.
As of 2017, Groodles Australia has donated over $350,000 to these respective charities, with over $85,000 donated in the 2017 financial year alone. The beauty of Groodles Australia is that it provides scope for significant donations to organisations which are dear to the hearts of our veterinary team and participating guardian families. Our wonderful families have fun (and work extremely hard!) to raise the most delightful puppies in their own homes, underpinned by the high standards and thoughtful personal care of our award-winning veterinary practice. We hope that our Guardian Family participants, our veterinary staff, and buyers of our gorgeous puppies are proud of, and delighted by Groodles Australia at every level.
