Genetics, Sizing & Health Testing

All of our breeding dogs are DNA tested and undergo radiographs of the hips and elbow joints. Only the dogs with the best ‘scores’ are used for breeding!

Letters and Numbers – What do they mean?

When a litter is advertised, you will see a letter and a number next to the litter’s breed (Such as F1, F2 or F3). The letter ‘F’ stands for Filial, which denotes the offspring of a cross. The number corresponds to the litter’s generation.

F1 Generation

Describes the cross between two separate pure breeds. For Groodles, this would be the Golden Retriever and the Poodle (either toy, mini or standard)

F2 Generation

Describes the cross between two F1 generation Groodles.

F3 Generation (not commonly used)

Describes the cross between an F2 and an F2. While generations can continue indefinitely, an F3 or higher-generation Groodle crossed with another F3 or higher Groodle is generally referred to as ‘Multi-Generational’.

Groodles come in two different sizes, which is dependant on the type of Poodle used in their heritage.

Miniature: Height can vary between 35cm and 48cm at the shoulder. Average adult weight can be between 15kg – 23kg.

Standard: Height can vary between 50cm and 70cm at the shoulder. Average adult weight can vary between 25kg – 45kg.

Health Testing

Health testing is carried out on ALL of our parent dogs (being either Golden Retrievers, Poodles, or Groodles), and this is achieved by collecting cells and saliva from a cheek swab. The swab sample is then packaged and sent to an independent laboratory where a health profile is completed. We ensure our breeding dogs are checked against the following

Golden Retrievers

– Progressive Retinal Atrophy
– Degenerative Myelopathy
– Progressive Rode Cone Degeneration
– Muscular Dystrophy – X-linked
– A Locus
– K Locus

Poodle (Standard)

– Degenerative Myelopathy C- DGMY
– Neonatal Encephalopathy C-NENY
– von Willebrand’s Disease Type I C-VWD1
– Renal Dysplasia C-RDSP

Poodle (Miniature)

– Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration – PRA C-PRCD
– Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy/Krabbe’s Disease C-GCLY
– Renal Dysplasia C-RDSP

Poodle (Toy)

– Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration – PRA C-PRCD
– Renal Dysplasia C-RDSP

Groodle testing is a combination of both of the above.

Hip and Elbow Testing

Our parent Groodles are Hip Scored using the PennHip scoring system. This radiographic procedure is carried out by selected Veterinarians at Greater Springfield Veterinary, who are specially qualified in this method of testing.

Our parent Groodles also undergo radiographs of their elbows prior to breeding (as the elbow joint is often commonly affected by genetics). The images are then sent to an independent radiographic imaging specialist for an opinion on whether or not conditions such as elbow dysplasia exist.

Groodles Australia is a generous, community-minded, social enterprise, breeding the most beautiful, sound, healthy and intelligent Groodle pups for the enrichment of all involved.

Groodles have become a popular choice for many, with some being specially trained to become service dogs, companion animals for children with disabilities (including autism) and as medical alert dogs (for diabetics and epileptics).

This beautiful breed suits individuals and families from all walks of life, and we think they are very special indeed.

Hello all its Bree, Locky and Donna We just wanted to let you know that Oscar (little boy) is doing very well. Today he went to puppy day care and he went very well top of the class. He is enjoying our garden very much, his our own little gardener, his pulling out the grass and watering it for us, oh and pulling out our sprinklers. He is so great he has made our life wonderful we still have much to learn. Thanks so much, we would recommend you to anybody who would be thinking of buying a groodle. Once again thanks.

Jenni & Tilly

We are very happy with our decision to purchase our groodle pup. Purchasing Tilly through Jeannet’s groodle program gave us confidence that we were buying a healthy pup Tilly has settled in quickly; and with the help of puppy pre-school is an easy to train, beautiful natured dog. She has quickly found a place in all our hearts. She is always close by, enjoys being handled, is easy to groom, easy to please. She puts a smile on all our faces every day!

Regards, Jenni

Thank you so much for the effort that you put in to join her with us, we couldn't be happier as she fit in straight away.
Her favourite things seem to be eating cheese (much like myself), attempting to get our cats to play with her (they do not agree with this), chasing her frisbee, and stealing the best seat on the couch!
