Fleas
Fleas are most active during the warmer months, but because our homes stay warm through winter, we often see flea activity year-round.
Only a small number of fleas live on your pet — most of the flea life cycle (eggs, larvae, pupae) occurs in the environment. For effective control, it’s essential to treat both your pet and their surroundings.
We recommend:
We do not recommend flea collars or shampoos alone, as they don’t address environmental infestation and often fall short of long-term protection.
Important: Some supermarket or non-veterinary flea treatments used for dogs can be toxic to cats. Always seek professional advice to choose the safest and most effective option for your pet.
Ticks
The most dangerous tick for pets in Australia is the Paralysis Tick. They can cause life-threatening paralysis in dogs and cats, often within 2–4 days of attaching. While paralysis ticks are typically found in bushland and coastal areas, pets can be exposed through items like rugs, plants or towels from affected areas, or from wildlife in your yard.
Early signs of paralysis include:
If your pet shows any of these signs, this is an emergency. Seek veterinary care straight away.
Treatment for tick paralysis can be expensive and intensive – prevention is far safer and more affordable.
We’ll happily demonstrate how to conduct a proper tick check, or, administer an annual flea/tick combo injection (for dogs) — just give us a call.
We offer great discounts on parasite preventatives!
