A critical habitat for a vast number of animals.
Woogaroo Forest
Woogaroo Forest, spanning approximately 450 hectares, is a vital habitat for a diverse range of native species including koalas, echidnas, and owls. This precious ecosystem, literally on our doorsteps, is currently under threat from four development proposals:
Eugene St (Bellevue Woods)
Springview Estate (Village 2 & 3)
Scenic Precinct (Muir Boulevard)
Peninsular Precinct (Muir Boulevard)
Earlier this year in March, Ipswich City Council approved the precinct plan for Springview Village 2 & 3. Despite this, there is still an opportunity to make a difference. The developer requires approval from the Commonwealth Government under the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act 1999, which has not yet been granted. This means that the council’s decision is not final.
Taking A Stand
Greater Springfield Veterinary Group is proud to join the community in raising our voices to protect Woogaroo Forest, an area that many of our staff are passionate about defending. If these developments proceed, the sustainability and future of the forests and wildlife in the urban east of Ipswich could be at serious risk.
Dr Jeannet Kessels
Dr Jeannet Kessels, our owner and director, spoke passionately at a recent public event, highlighting the devastating impact this project could have on the local wildlife.
A resident of the area for 35 years, Jeannet has witnessed firsthand the incredible biodiversity of Woogaroo Forest. From koalas and echidnas to regent bowerbirds and platypus, this vital ecosystem is home to over 130 species. Clearing the forest would destroy these animals’ homes and food sources, pushing them further towards extinction.
Here are some key takeaways from her speech:
– The loss of 70% of global wildlife since her childhood highlights the urgency of protecting our natural world.
– Clearing Woogaroo Forest would devastate local wildlife populations, disrupting their social structures, food sources, and breeding grounds.
– We have a responsibility to future generations to protect these irreplaceable wild places.
– Just as the Derwent River edict banned the killing of black swans, we need to find ways to coexist with wildlife, not displace them.
– Woogaroo Forest offers us a chance to connect with nature, improve our well-being, and appreciate Australia’s unique biodiversity.
Greater Springfield Veterinary Group supports our directors passion and conviction for the preservation of Woogaroo Forest. If you would like to help, we encourage you to visit the Queensland Conservation Council and sign the petition, which has gained over 15,000 signatures!
